The Summer Reading Saga Continues.........

There are not words enough to express the HUGE SUCCESS of the EdVenture trip that the Summer Readers went on last Friday. We loaded a chartered bus at 7:30 AM and were on our way to Columbia SC. When we arrived the children were introduced to Eddie, the World's Largest Child. Eddie sits in the foyer of the museum and rises forty feet in the air. He weighs 35.000 pounds...that's 17.5 TONS! His shoes alone are about the size of an average automobile. The children were FASCINATED!! But there is more, when you go around the back of Eddie, you get to enter and see how his body functions. I am here to tell you, this is one impressive 10 year old boy! After Eddie, the museum is self guided, so you can pretty much wander around as much or as little as you like.

After a couple of hours the group went to McDonalds for a nice lunch. Then it was off to the Richland County Library to visit their Children's Library.

Librarian Leslie Petreault entertained the group with a puppet show, songs and storytime. We thank Leslie for her hospitality and the hospitality of the entire staff.

Well, it was quite a day, and the bus trip home was very, very quiet. Every child was fast asleep.

This week wraps up the Summer Reading Program with a scavenger hunt at Lee State Park and Recreational Area.

Returning to the Blog

It's been pretty quiet at the blogosphere lately, but we have our reasons. Your faithful blogette was out of the office last week for most of the week. She is also suffering from a fine summer cold that has slowed her down a bit. Additionally, the library is suffering from computer meltdown that has put a damper on blog efforts. But we will soldier on.

Last week the summer readers had a wonderful performance by Judy Pancoast, aka Judy Tunes. Judy presented a wonderful musical program that had all the children up, dancing and singing. We will have pictures up on the Flickr site as soon as our computer malaise is cured.

This week will be the big EdVenture field trip with a side trip to the Richland County Library. We will have lots of pictures from that and, hopefully, have them up on YouTube shortly.

Summer Reading Field Trip...to Pizza Hut!!

The Summer Reading group had a great time this morning as they met and went out to the Pizza Hut. The readers had a quick review of restaurant etiquette, then headed off to the kitchen. In the kitchen everyone washed their hands then, with the help of Derrick Hickman, they each made their own personal pan pizza. On the other end of the oven conveyor, Ms. Cindy Durant unpanned and cut the pizzas. The children were fascinated with the process.

Many thanks to Mr. Hickman, Ms Durant and Ms. Ruthie McLeod for all their assistance and good humor.

State Library Honchos visit the Lee County Library....

The Lee County Library hosted a lovely drop-in for the Lee County Council, Bishopville City Council and the members of the 10:00 Coffee Club this morning to meet and greet some guests from the South Carolina State Library. Mr. David Goble, Director of the South Carolina State Library and Dr. Curtis Rogers, Director of Library Services came to visit our new facility along with Felicia Vareen and Shae Tetterton. Their visit corresponded nicely with the one year anniversary of our move so we thought we would have a little party. Coffee and cake was served and a fine time was had by all.

Communities in Schools Visit!!

The Summer Campers at the Communities in Schools program have been paying daily visits to the Library this week. This valuable program offers afterschool activities and educational experiences for Lee County Children. The summer program is taking place at the Bishopville Opera House this week, so it was an easy walk to come to visit the Library. The Librarians love to see them and we were able to sign up several new, young patrons.
